A deep grid of concrete fins shades the reading rooms, so the books never see direct sun and the readers always see the sky.

The brief asked for two things that usually fight: a lot of daylight and no sun on the books. The lattice answers both. Each fin is angled to the path of the sun on that side of the building.

The fins are precast in a yard nearby and bolted to the slabs, which kept the site quiet during term time and let us replace any single piece later.

Inside, the reading rooms are tall and calm. The lattice turns the city into a pattern of small framed views, one for every desk.
