Two long blocks face each other across a narrow court, so every home looks onto a garden instead of a street.
The site sits between a rail line and a busy road. We turned the blocks inward: the noisy sides are almost closed, and all the living rooms open to the court.
The court is planted with birch and grasses that survive the Montréal winter. In summer it is the coolest place in the neighbourhood.
Deep window frames in the concrete give each flat a seat by the glass, where the low winter sun reaches far into the rooms.
